The drivers were caught within the Wangaratta Police Service Area, which encompasses the Moira Shire.
Police also caught four drug drivers and three disqualified drivers, with other drivers caught for various different offences.
On Saturday, November 4, Cobram police caught a driver they alleged was driving at 169km/h, more than double the legal limit, on Labuan Rd.
A 20-year-old man from a town in the local area has been charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed and speeding and will appear in a magistrates’ court early next year.
However, according to Senior Sergeant Nathan Ractliffe, on the whole, driver behaviour was nothing unusual in the Cobram area.
“Driver behaviour was pretty ordinary over the Melbourne Cup weekend, and that is indicative of the statistics in the area,” he said.
According to Sen Sgt Ractliffe, the biggest concern for Cobram police were those creeping over the speed limit by five to 10km. Police said these cases made up most of the 96 speeding offences in the area and were at most risk of road trauma.
Though there were no fatalities in the Cobram area, the Melbourne Cup weekend has been described as a horrorshow with 13 lives lost, bringing the state’s road toll to 251 for the year to date; the highest since 2008, when 256 lives were lost at the same time of the year.
