The trophy was awarded for having the best locally produced advertisement in the spot colour section.
The winning advertisement depicts the Strawberry Festival at Kings Family Supermarket.
Highly recommended in the awards was an advertisement for the Kyabram Credit Union.
Marathon run
Kyabram livewire Tim Nelson wasn’t quite prepared for what he got himself into when he ‘shuffled the cards’ on a recent trip to the Sunshine Coast.
Tim, an endurance athlete, thought it was a simple task securing his brother Sam’s ticket to compete in the annual Sunshine Coast Marathon.
Tim originally intended to run in the half-marathon with his lawyer brother Sam and Sam’s wife, Sarah, who live on the Sunshine Coast these days.
But Sam had mistakenly entered for the marathon — not the half-marathon.
Organisers refused to let Tim swap with Sam, so Tim pulled a few strings so Sam and Sara could contest the half-marathon together and he could tackle the longer marathon.
Sam and Sarah both made it to the finish line. Tim also made it to the finish line in the marathon but endured a fair bit of pain in the process.
As Tim’s mother, Judy, observed, Tim’s effort was pretty impressive given his preparation for the marathon was a diet of beer and oysters.
Tim will be back in the spotlight on Saturday night in his home town as compere for a function in which his father, Peter, will be honoured for his contribution to the town and district over 60 years.
The function is at the Kyabram Club and tickets can be obtained from Kyabram Football Club president John Guinan (phone 0418 324 020) by tonight.
Works start
A major refurbishment of Tatura’s Moyola Lodge aged care home has begun, supported by over $7.9 million in Federal Government funding.
The project will transform the facility into a contemporary aged care home, with upgrades including new bathrooms, the relocation of three resident rooms, improved social spaces and amenities, and roof replacements in refurbished areas.
The project is expected to completed by May next year.
Out of luck
Researchers surveying for crayfish in the Edward and Wakool rivers recently didn’t have much luck.
They got only one cray at Moulamein and none at Kyalite.
While they were in Moulamein they also put their fish nets in the Moulamein Lake.
They had put some olive perchlet fish into the Moulamein lake some time ago and were pleasantly surprised to find they were breeding in there.
The olive perchlet (Pseudoambassis agassizii), also called Agassiz’s glassfish, is a tiny, semi-transparent native Australian freshwater fish.
Growing up to 7.5cm, it features dark-edged scale patterns and large eyes.
It lives in slow-flowing rivers, wetlands and swamps across eastern and Murray-Darling drainages, though western populations are listed as endangered species.
Works start
Construction has started at Deniliquin RSL on its long-planned alfresco area, marking the start of a $700,000 project to modernise and expand the venue’s outdoor facilities.
New furniture, including chairs, bases and privacy screens, will also be installed as part of the alfresco redevelopment.
Medals stolen
A Vietnam War veteran had two medals stolen from his Shepparton property while on holidays in Queensland.
A stash of the stolen items was discovered in an empty nearby house but the medals weren’t there.
The victim said the thieves were selective in what they stole and took only items that could be resold.
Waste fire
The CFA was called to a large fire of burning industrial waste at Coomboona early on Sunday, August 9.
The fire measured 70m by about 30m and took nearly two hours to bring under control.
Seven CFA vehicle supported by Fire Rescue Victoria crews attended the fire, which police said was not suspicious.
Creative club meets
Amplify Creative Club will be at the Shepparton library on Saturday, August 22, with a free series of workshops for young people to build music and recording skills and enjoy free pizza.
No experience is needed and registrations can be completed at shepp.city/creativehub
