The Yarrawonga Football Netball Club Reserves team did the unthinkable, defeating the undefeated Albury Tigers by 54 points to take out the 2019 Carlton Mid Reserves Cup at Wangaratta’s Norm Minns Oval on Sunday.

The Tigers came out firing in the first five minutes of the match but were never truly in the hunt thereafter with the Pigeons controlling the play all day.

Yarrawonga went into the game with a heavy focus on their tackling pressure. Albury were expecting Yarrawonga’s press but were unable to adapt which evidently caused a loss of skill and speed allowing the Pigeons to capitalise.

Yarrawonga also controlled the Albury ruckmen, giving the Pigeons opportunities with the midfield raking the ball forward.

Luke Congram kicked two goals at opportune times to keep the Pigeons in the hunt with a strong boost at three quarter time when he kicked a 50 metre plus goal from the boundary.

Tim Lawrence and Marcus McMillan, who left the field after a heavy clash and returned to the ground with a mound of tape both kicked three majors.

Best on ground Jordan Urquhart as well as all the back six were fantastic with Cameron Byrne the general.

The onballers all gave for the entirety of the match too, with the club’s second premiership in two years coming down to the efforts of all 21 men and their teamwork.

Yarrawonga Football Netball Club President Scott Jaques said bringing home two premierships (Reserves football and C Grade netball) was another outstanding result for the club.

“Two out of three premierships is great. Although the B Grade came agonisingly close, losing by just four goals,” Scott said.

“It was a nice way to finish off what has been another great season for the club and congratulations to our reserves team and our C Grade netballers.

“We now look forward to celebrating the season at our senior presentation night this Thursday at ClubMulwala.”
