The mercury climbed to 46 degrees, 0.3 degrees warmer than the previous record of 45.7 degrees on January 5, 2013.
The overnight low was just 21.2 degrees making for an uncomfortable night.
Wednesday’s maximum was 13.1 degrees hotter than average for the date and the minimum was 5.1 degrees above average.
There was little sign of relief on Thursday, but the week-long heatwave finally broke over the weekend to Sunday’s welcome 29 degrees.
Malakai, Gavin and Gillean Hickey from Chiltern were grateful for Sunday’s cool change and headed to the Yarrawonga foreshore for a swim.
The temperature wasn’t the only record broken last week.
Yarrawonga recorded its highest water usage on record on Australia Day with 13 million litres in one day.
The usual volume is about 10 million litres.
Tuesday and Wednesday saw almost 12 million litres a day used.
A spokesperson for North East Water said most of the water was outdoor use which usually doubles in a heatwave.
He said topping up pools, watering gardens, and having cold showers usually spikes on hot days.
“This puts extra pressure on our treatment plants and can make it harder for them to keep up with demand, especially in smaller towns.” he said.
And while last week’s heatwave is behind us, summer not yet over.

Chloe and Michael Goodfellow from Tabletop said they hibernated in their pool at home last week but were happy to spend the day in Yarrawonga on Sunday.
