NAIDOC celebrations are a special part of the community, celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from Sunday, July 2 to Sunday, July 9.
The 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme is ‘For Our Elders’ to highlight the important role that cultural knowledge holders and leaders bring to their communities.
The theme is significant as across every generation Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.
They guide generations and pave the way for the next generation to take the paths they can take today.
Youth on their school holiday break, adults and seniors alike will find an entertaining activity to do in the Federation Council area during NAIDOC Week with Many Mobs Indigenous Corporation hosting weaving sessions to create a unique handmade object.
Participants from ages eight and above will learn versatile weaving skills and techniques.
A Weaving Workshop will take place in Howlong today, Wednesday, July 5 before Federation Council Libraries will also be conducting NAIDOC themed storytime sessions and craft activities for 5-15 year olds to decorate their own NAIDOC inspired projects today in the Urana Council Office and the Corowa and Howlong Libraries on Thursday, July 6.
A session was also held at the Mulwala Library on Tuesday.
Many Mobs Indigenous Corporation will host their Yarrawonga NAIDOC celebrations in late July to allow school children to attend with more information to follow in future additions of the Chronicle.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Pat Bourke said these NAIDOC Week celebrations are a great opportunity for all members of the community to experience cultural exchange through free family friendly events.
“The sharing of knowledge and skills is invaluable in understanding and acknowledging the Bangerang and Wiradjuri people's connection to the land, waters, and community in which we live,” he said.
Bookings for the Cultural Day and Weaving Workshops are essential. Limited places available. Register your interest in attending a workshop from the Federation Council website.
