When Jan Parker discovered that thieves had stolen a defibrillator, mower, wheelbarrow, trailer and other small equipment from Yarrawonga Cemetery she was disgusted.
And judging by the response to the Cemetery Trust’s post on social media, so were a lot of people.
“To the morons that broke into the Yarrawonga Cemetery over night, I hope that you or your family never need the use of the defibrillator to save their life,” she posted.
“To say this is disgusting is an understatement.”
The post was shared 115 times and people were quick to express their disappointment at the extreme disrespect for such a sacred place and for volunteers who look after it.
Mrs Parker said the theft was discovered by a man whose wife is buried at the cemetery and visits at least once a day.
“He rang and said the mower was stolen and the shed lock smashed,” she said.
“The sign that shows the defibrillator was gone as well.
“The sad part of it is that it’s the volunteers who use that equipment.”
Mrs Parker said the incident had brought out a lot of anger in a lot of people.
“I was reasonably restrained in what I called them … morons,” she said.
“It could be one of their family that needs that defib one day.”
There are no security cameras at the Yarrawonga Cemetery, but the incident has prompted a rethink with plans now to have them installed.
