Cobram spared the worst as thunderstorms sweep region

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Cobram and Tocumwal areas on the evening of Wednesday, July 1, but Cobram escaped with only minor damage.

Cobram SES received just two call-outs during the storm, mainly for water inundation, blocked gutters and damaged roof tiles.

Unit commander Luke Herezo said Cobram was fortunate to avoid the strong winds experienced in surrounding areas.

He said the unit had been focusing on community engagement around preventative property maintenance and hoped those efforts had helped reduce the storm’s impact.

Tocumwal was slightly harder hit, with NSW SES crews responding to four incidents across the area.

Unit commander Justin Greatorex said crews had expected a much busier night.

“We had one tree blown down over a power line in Barooga and had to wait for Essential Energy to come out as the power line was still live,” he said.

On the morning of Thursday, July 2, crews were called to Tuppal Rd in Tocumwal after several branches fell from surrounding gum trees, with one smashing through the rear window of a parked car.
