V/Line trains came to a standstill on Wednesday, May 18, due to a communications outage.
According to the Department of Transport, the issue restricted the V/Line control centre being able to communicate with trains on the regional network and all services were suspended “out of an abundance of caution”.
Services resumed about an hour later but delays were expected as trains got back into the regular timetable.
“Trains were initially held in their position across all regional lines because it was not safe for them to continue without drivers and controllers being able to communicate,” a transport alert issued on Wednesday read.
“V/Line then put alternative safety protocols in place to allow trains to resume by activating its backup communications system.
“V/Line is working closely with VicTrack and telecommunications providers to identify the cause of the fault and complete repairs.“
