Armstrong Siddeley Car Club national rally

From Friday, April 29 until Monday May 2 Yarrawonga Mulwala will host the Armstrong Siddeley Car Club for its annual national rally.

Although production of this once well-known marque ceased some 62 years ago the vehicles that Armstrong Siddeley produced from 1919 until 1960 were held in such high regard that there is a strong and loyal group of enthusiasts that carry on the preservation and restoration of these classic English vehicles, and with it the enjoyment that ownership brings.

Heavily involved too in the Aviation industry, Armstrong Siddeley vehicles were advertised as “Cars of Aircraft Quality”, and it is their sound design, reliability and good access to parts that makes them a very practical classic to own.

To further emphasise the shared association to the aircraft and aircraft engine concern, the various models of cars post WW2 were named after some of the companies well known aviation products, such as Hurricane, Lancaster, Whitley and Sapphire.

Always well engineered, the strong chassis of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s lent itself well to a popular utility version that had options of both a standard cabin and tub arrangement, or a shorter tub longer cabin for the inclusion of rear seats.

On Saturday, April 30 from 9am until 1pm at the lake foreshore there will be a display of various models of Armstrong Siddeley, including a unique racing monoposto car from 1951.

Most successful Good Friday ever!

Winner of the Tungamah Social Club’s Good Friday Appeal yabby race Bianca Beaton and car rally winner Sarah Duffy with second place Robyn Harrison.

The town of Tungamah was bustling on Good Friday, with locals and visitors visiting the Tungamah Hotel for the town’s annual Good Friday Appeal.

The appeal, hosted by the Tungamah Social Club, was a huge success with all those attending enjoying what was on offer.

The day kicked off with the CFA and its volunteers walking the town and rattling their tins.

At the hotel the first event was a car rally which sent drivers out and about in the local area following directions and answering questions along the way.

There were 14 cars in total with the Duffy family winning the rally, followed by Les and Robyn Harrison.

There was plenty happening in the beer garden of the hotel including raffles, stalls, activities for the kids and a jumping castle. The crowd gathered at 2pm for the annual Good Friday Yabby Race. Twelve yabbies were auctioned off, raising over $1200 for the appeal.

Excitement mounted as the race began with the winning yabby belonging to Bianca Beaton.

Bianca, pleased with her win, is now etched on the perpetual trophy which is sponsored by the Tungamah Garage.

Next up was the Good and Services auction. With ninety items on offer, bidders were at the ready to make a purchase on some of the brilliant items.

The auctioneers, Trent Head and Bruce Beaton did an outstanding job with all items going under the hammer.

The day was a massive success for the Tungamah Social Club who this year raised a whopping $43 848.36 for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

This is the biggest total amount raised in the history of the social club. This takes their total fundraising for the children’s hospital in thirteen years to just over $260 000, a mammoth effort for a small club and small community.

Social club president Greg Ford thanked all those involved on the day and in the weeks leading up to the appeal.

“A lot of work and preparation happens prior to Good Friday and I am very grateful to those who do the hard yards leading up to our appeal,” Greg said.

“To those who helped on the day or with set up and pack up, thank you. Without your help a day like this could not go ahead.”

Greg was overwhelmed not only by the total raised, but also the support from sponsors, businesses and the community.

“The support we received from local businesses was phenomenal. We are coming out of two years of a pandemic, which hit small business hard, yet most local businesses were only too happy to make a donation to this worthy cause,” Greg said.

“These donations contributed to our grand total, of which 100% goes to the Royal Children’s Hospital.”

The Tungamah Social Club wish to acknowledge the communities of Tungamah, Yarrawonga and surrounds, as well as all those involved in their appeal in any way and they look forward to your continued support.
