The ‘Yarrawonga Urban Landcare team has been planting, nurturing and maintaining the native trees and shrubs along Mac’s Track for more than 15 years.
This development not only provides screening from the industrial area but is also a thriving habitat for native birds and animals.
Unfortunately, 2020 tonnes of soil was dumped behind the Transfer Station during the upgrade of Gilmore Street, which resulted in extensive track damage and destroyed some of the plants.
In an attempt to fix the quagmire, the track had become in wet weather, it was then re-surfaced with road metal, rather than a surface suitable for community use.
After some years of the Urban Landcare petitioning council, the track is returning to its original use. It now has a suitable granitic sand surface for cyclists, walkers, and pram pushers.
The vegetation has been machine pruned and there is now a designated parking area at the end of Melaleuca St so that unauthorised vehicles can’t access the track.
Yarrawonga Urban Landcare would like to thank council representatives who have made this happen, particularly Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson, Sean Carter and Mark Lambourn.
Take a walk along McNamara’s Track and enjoy the improvements.
