Federation Council’s draft ageing well strategy 2026-2030 was formally adopted last week following no submissions received to the draft strategy.
While a lack of feedback can sometimes indicate low engagement, the extensive pre-exhibition consultation phase, which involved over 450 survey responses and six workshops, suggested the community’s priorities were accurately captured in the initial drafting process.
Immediately prior to council’s May 19 monthly meeting, ageing well stalwart Liz Seeliger of Mulwala addressed council, encouraging councillors to support the draft strategy.
One of four original members of the ageing well committee in 2017, Liz said she has had nine years under the “wonderful guidance of Amber Harvey” (council’s team leader community development).
“We are very proud to represent Federation Council on this very important committee and present the new 2026-2030 strategy to you,” Liz said.
“There are 38 per cent of over 60 age residents in our shire and 23 per cent volunteer regularly.
“The adoption of this ageing well strategy will benefit the whole of Federation Council.
“We are still as strong as ever – even stronger with improvements still to be made.”
One of Liz’s mottos is; “Take care of your body and it will take care of you.”
The strategy aims to address the specific needs of our ageing population, focusing on: living in an age-friendly environment, participating in age-friendly communities, staying safe, active and healthy, and being resilient and informed.
Councillors and executive staff unanimously endorsed the 2026-2030 Ageing Well Strategy.
