The NSW electorate of Farrer includes the cities of Albury and Griffith and is currently without a sitting member.
Former leader of the Opposition, Sussan Ley resigned after losing a leadership spill on February 27 triggering the by election.
Farrer reaches from the city of Albury, along the Murray River to the South Australian border.
It covers an area of 126,563 km2 with 128,630 electors.
The seat was won by former Nationals leader, Tim Fisher in 1984 and held until his retirement in 2001 when it was won by the Liberals and Sussan Ley.
Ms Ley held the seat for 25 years.
In 2026, the by election is shaping up to be a contest between the Liberal Party, Independent Michelle Milthorpe, The Nationals, and One Nation.
The Liberals are yet to endorse a candidate, and the ALP is not expected to contest the by election.
Mrs Milthorpe ran second to Ms Ley last year winning 20 per cent of the primary vote and all of the Albury booths.
She said people were watching major parties tear themselves apart over internal politics and culture wars, while the real issues impacting regional Australians were being ignored.
“Our water is being grossly mismanaged; every week … is another hit to food production, farming communities, and long-term food security for the nation,” she said.
Farrer branch members have selected former military commander Brad Robertson to contest the election for The Nationals.
Mr Robertson said wanted to fight for better healthcare access, water management, and to protect the food and fibre industries.
He believes the Farrer electorate reflects the core values of the National Party and is confident of polling well.
One Nation selected David Farley from Narrandera who said his priorities would be slashing mass migration, scrapping net zero and smarter water reform policies.
In Albury last week he said whether One Nation would support a greenfield hospital would be a decision for the party.
The Greens have pre-selected Richard Hendrie, an award-winning advocate and expert in mental health reform and suicide prevention.
Mr Hendrie represented The Greens in 2025 said the focus would be on highlighting practical ways the Federal Government can fund the health, housing and energy needs of the Farrer electorate.
He is a long-standing advocate for a new single-site regional hospital for Albury-Wodonga.
