Sweet milestone

Two-hundred games would be sweet for anyone, but for Merrigum Football Club player Greg Sullivan, a goal in the last quarter made it even sweeter.
Sullivan had been with Merrigum Football Club since 2003, when he was just 17, and usually played in defence but was put into the forward line for part of Saturday’s game against Longwood.
Merrigum coach Christian Barnett said Sullivan was as handy off the field as he was on the field, volunteering as a member of the football club’s committee.
Barnett said Sullivan would be with the club for a long time to come.

Volunteers thanked
St Vincent de Paul Kyabram’s Joan McConkey was one of several volunteers across the district to receive a service award at Shepparton RSL on Thursday.
Mrs McConkey received a five-year service award in recognition of her hard work at Vinnies Kyabram on Allan St.
She said working for the organisation enabled her to meet new people and develop long-term friendships.
‘‘I moved to Kyabram from Western Australia about eight years ago and I didn’t know anyone,’’ she said.

Church dishes up a recipe book treat
Sometimes the recipes in today’s cookbooks get a bit too complicated and it is only after a trip to a city speciality store and several hours of preparation that you find you can meet the demands of a meal.
Kyabram St Andrew’s Missionary group members have recently reprinted a cook book the church published in 1972 and are hoping it will take the hassle out of cooking.
Missionary group member Beth Martin said recipes in the book included ‘‘a lot of vegetables and fat-free meat’’ and would allow cooks to save time.
‘‘It’s a very basic book including ingredients that most people will have in their cupboards,’’ she said.

State honours for Belinda
Young Stanhope netballer Belinda Gibbs has been selected to play in the Victorian 17 and under state side.
Belinda’s journey into the state team began in September last year when she attended a camp at Seymour where 50 girls were chosen to take the next step in the selection process for the state team.
Four regional camps were held throughout the state for netballers to try for the squad.
In December last year Belinda made it through to the last 20 and since then has trained with fellow squad members as a team while selectors narrowed the field.
When the final team of 12 was recently chosen Belinda’s name was in it.

Clara, 80, shows the way
Walking five kilometres to raise funds for juvenile diabetes research sounds an easy task, but Clara Wood, 80, made it on Sunday ― in a wheelchair.
Clara had a leg removed last November through diabetes complications.
But Clara has an unbelievable spirit and determination and once encouraged to do the walk by organiser Annie Potsma there was no holding her back, despite the inclement weather.
And Clara's reason for participating in the walk: “Everybody (the Diabetes Group) has been good to me, I had to return something to them.”

Students exercise simultaneously
Eighty-five students from Rushworth’s St Mary’s Primary School this week joined over 500,000 children throughout primary schools in Australia in an exercise program entitled “All Children Exercise Simultaneously”.
The ACES project, which organisers say will become Australia’s largest ever exercise participation event, was held on Wednesday, with children from throughout Australia exercising simultaneously between 10am and 11am.
ACES is an in-school community awareness project designed to draw attention to the falling activity levels among primary school children and the associated health risks.
Schools are invited to nominate an exercise program that they will perform.
St Mary’s students opted for a rigorous cross country run up Growlers Hill.

Gift to say ‘well done’
Glenda Prior's home club, Valley View, didn't let her effort in winning the Victorian Junior golf title last week go without recognition from the club.
Last Sunday club president Mr Frank Mansell presented Glenda with a chrome golf buggy paid for by members and associates of the club.
“The members and associates felt that they wanted to do something for Glenda to recognise her outstanding achievement,” Mr Mansell said.
Glenda must rank as one of the most casual sports champions the town has produced.

It was a winner
The Northern Victorian China Painters seminar held at Tongala last Friday and Saturday was an outstanding success.
Each member taking part, under the guidance of well-known teachers Nance Graham and Elma Hansson, painted at least two pieces on Friday.
These were ‘fired’ overnight and repainted again on Saturday, and some beautiful pieces resulted.
Already a number of inquiries have been made about future seminars and it is hoped another one can be arranged later in the year.

Top Lion well known in Tatura
Mr lan Stockdale of Glen Waverley, who was last week elected international director of Lions, is well known to many Tatura and district residents as his wife (formerly Miss Rae Lamb) has retained friendships and associations made when she and the family resided in Casey St.
An official publication distributed at the 24th Multiple District convention of Lions, at which the appointment was made, stated that lan was: “A sincere, compassionate and effective Lion, who has established himself as an inspirational motivator at all levels of Lionism.”
“The Lions village at Licola is one of the great projects in the Multiple District, he was the man who inspired Lions to buy the township.”
