Mr Spring was elected last Thursday night at the club’s Annual General Meeting to replace retiring director of 15 years, Don Presley.
Born in Yarrawonga in 1959, Mick’s family moved to Melbourne in 1970, he joined the Army in 1978 and retired in 2018 with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1.
The popular 61-year-old retired ex-serviceman returned to Yarrawonga in 2018 and loves his golf. Married to Donna, Mick plays off a handicap of 10 and has been as low as seven.
More of the 111 voting members at the AGM chose Mick over Dario Prighel who sought a comeback to the Board, as director, following his improved health. Both candidates were thanked by president Gil Cunningham for their interest.
Seconded as a director to replace Steve Buckley who resigned in 2019, Fred Exton was confirmed as director. Roly-poly Peter Warner was re-elected unopposed as men’s club captain.
Retiring director Don Presley, 78, was praised for his service and was presented with a certificate from ClubNSW by local club president Gil Cunningham who referred to Don’s “substantial knowledge” and being “a voice of reason”. An article appeared in the Yarrawonga Chronicle of January 13.
Club Chief Executive Officer Peter Savy added his praise last Thursday night, reeling off the long list of building projects in which Don covered from the Board’s point of view: Greenside Terrace 2007, Boronia Villas 2008, Gymnasium 2009, Willow Room 2010, Acacia Villas 2011, Outdoor Gaming Area 2012, Cinema 2014 and numerous club refurbishments. “I’ll miss his support and advice,” the CEO said.
Member Bob Castles, who was a junior pennant manager, expressed his appreciation to Don for always being a caddie for juniors and said it “a great credit to him” for all the building projects in which he was involved.
Members gave Don, who was shire clerk of the former Yarrawonga Shire Council for 18 years, a big round of applause.
