Finley Fire + Rescue NSW Vice Captain Bernie Thompson said his brigade was called to a property on Pine Lodge Rd about 6pm.
By the time they arrived, Rural Fire Service crews and farmers with firefighting equipment had already knocked much of the fire down.
“The windrower’s engine caught fire while going through hay stubble,” Vice Capt Thompson said.
“In the end the fire only burned an area measuring only 100m by 100m, which was a really good result.
“Two Rural Fire Service tankers were already starting to mop up, and we got out there and helped finished up the mopping up.”
Lightning risk still active
Firefighters are reminding landholders to keep a close eye on their properties after the recent weather conditions.
NSW Rural Fire Service Federation Zone Group Captain Greyd’n Davis said fires started by lighting can still spring up well after a storm has passed through the region.
In some cases it can take a week or more for a tree struck by lightning to have visible flames.
This is because the tree will burn from the inside out.
And with more isolated thunderstorms predicted for this week, he said watching for lightning is vital.
Grp Capt Davis also warned of complacency after the recent rain.
While it may still be wet under foot in some areas, it’s not taking long for the grass to dry out.
And with rain being followed by warm periods, grass growth is rampant across the district.
“Even though there has been a bit of rain, and fire can still get a run on,” he said.
If you see an unattended fire, please call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
