The Under 14 girls played their best game for the season at the JC Lowe Oval on Sunday.
The girls controlled the game from the outset with some fantastic teamwork on display along with strong forward line defence.
A big thankyou to the nine girls who each played a quarter for Wangaratta Rovers so everyone could play a full game.
This week we welcomed back Chelsea Hopwood, Mackenzie Clark, Rose Milthorpe and Lauren Hewitt who played great games and provided extra drive into the team.
Ava Mundie continued in the ruck this week and again showed her ability to jump and tap down to her teammates.
Amelie Thompson played another great game. She was given the job to run with one of Rovers better players, Mia Johnstone. Not only did she subdue Mia’s influence on the game she had plenty of the ball herself taking some great marks and brought other girls into the game.
Isabella Klein also played a great game, sweeping on many loose balls, outrunning her opposition and then finishing off with some fantastic kicking into the forward line.
A highlight of the day was Zoe Beatson’s running goal in the last quarter. A message went out to Zoe from the coach to keep making space in the forward line and wait for the ball to spill out. Zoe didn’t have to wait too long and soon enough the ball was kicked out of the pack, which she pounced on and then kicked a great goal on the run.
Angela Skipper was again in and under the packs with great support from Ella Pund.
Evelyn Niedzwiedzki had her goal scoring boots on kicking two fantastic goals. Ella Nixon also provided a good target up forward.
Hannah Loughnan and Jordan Adrien provided dash through the midfield and Lexi Nagle was busy up forward in the first half.
The girls’ tackling along with their keenness to follow up the ball with second and third efforts was a highlight of the game.
Well done girls.
Under 17s
United 9.11.65 defeated WangarattaRovers 4.3.27
Goals: Taylah Power 4, Trinny Preer 3, Arana Benne Keeble 3, Tate Benson 3, Bella Browne 2, Elizabeth Douglas 1, Tash Wilson 1, Lucynda Mansfield 1.
Best: Taylah Power, Tash Wilson, Arana Benne Keeble, Bella Browne, Samantha Peppler, Chantelle Maile.
This was another great win by the Under 17s dominating the contest for most of the game.
United were determined for a strong win after a very successful camp in Yarrawonga during the week.
From the outset you could see the improvement in the girls’ movement of the ball. Some great passages of play saw multiple link ups as they moved the ball efficiently into their forward line.
Each time a United player had the ball in hand they were immediately looking for their team mates rather than bombing the ball into a contested play.
The team focus was again on first options and linking up throughout and the girls did this with gusto.
This focus allowed for some great transitions down the ground again allowing for more time in the forward half.
Taylah Power was again busy in front of goal with four majors, showing why she is the competition’s leading goal kicker.
Tash Wilson was everywhere, cleverly weaving through traffic and sending the ball forward on both feet.
Arana Benne Keeble played another great game up forward providing plenty of leads along with Bella Browne who showed her overhead marking class and beautiful kicking skills.
Sam Peppler was again solid in the ruck and constantly attacked the ball all game.
Maddie Ibraham was busy playing off half back sending the ball back into the forward line on countless occasions.
Overall, it was another great team effort by the girls, with so much improvement and more potential to come.
Open Women’s
United 0.0.0 defeated by WangarattaRovers 8.11.59
Best: Emily Hurley, Amy Niklaus , Amie Antonello, Annie Robillard, Meg Wheeler, Maddie Duffy, Sophia Gray, Claire Hibbert.
United Open Women’s side showcasing women’s football
Saturday afternoon saw the open women’s football take on the Wangaratta Rovers after the senior Yarrawonga men’s game.
The girl’s relished this opportunity to show how good they are, and the match was a great spectacle.
Rovers jumped the home side at the start with two quick goals, then the next quarter and half it was an even arm wrestle. Amy Niklaus, as she has done all year, competed for every contest on the half back line.
One of the United coaches, Emily Hurley, was inspirational at one stage beating three opponents to win the ball.
Layne Parker showed her class and tenacity and won plenty of the ball.
Sophia Gray showed great potential as a strong running onballer.
Annie Robillard was one of United’s leaders and contested everything that came her way.
A testament to the girls’ commitment to this side was seen in two special efforts by two terrific girls.
Amie Antonello played A Grade netball for Myrtleford at Lavington and then rushed back to play centre half back. Watching her determined effort and fight was truly inspirational.
Claire Hibbert, who is one of the United’s leaders and is also one of our local vets, performed an emergency operation and then rushed to the ground to pull on the boots.
United are so lucky to have such committed people as part of the team.
It was great to see so many forward entries in the second half and so frustrating that we still can’t convert them into goals.
The Rovers owned the third quarter with goals coming from several players who ran loose into their forward line.
