Its annual Junior Public Speaking competition final was held on Sunday, June 28 at the Benalla RSL Hall.
A Benalla Lions Club spokesperson said that eight amazing students presented their speeches to an audience of 55 people.
“The students were representing Australian Christian College – Hume, Benalla P1-2 College – Avon St Campus, Benalla P-12 College – Waller St Campus and St Joseph’s Primary School,” the spokesperson said.
“There was two sections with four students in each.”
Years 3 and 4
The club representative who won this section was Macey Symes from St Joseph’s Primary School, her topic was Hamilton Island, Queensland.
And the runner-up was Reuben Jones from Australian Christian College – Hume, his topic was the Daly River, in the Northern Territory.
Years 5 and 6
The club representative winner in this section was Bernice Ncube from P-12 College – Waller St Campus. Bernice chose Nelson Mandela for her topic.
The runner-up was Kaldon Brown from the Australian Christian College – Hume. His topic was Nikola Tesla.
“All students spoke extremely well,” the spokesperson said.
The Judges for the event, who had a very difficult job deciding the winners, were Kelly Wallace, Senior Sergeant Mark Byers and Benalla Rural City Councillor Vince Branigan.
Macey and Bernice will now represent the Benalla Lions Club and their Schools in the regional final which will be held on Sunday, August 16, in the Benalla RSL Hall on Nunn St, at 1pm.
“Other clubs and schools participating in the regional final are from Corowa, Beechworth and Wangaratta,” the spokesperson said.
“Thank you to our three judges, chaperones Anna Lynch and Dan Brown, timekeeper Di Humphries, as well as emcees Peter and Margaret Poels.
“And thank you to the RSL for allowing us to use their hall and the ladies for providing afternoon tea.”
