The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning is completing minor roadworks on Wyndham St throughout August to prepare for the signals’ activation.
The works include concreting, pole installation and electrical works, with lane closures and reduced speed limits in place when needed.
Works are expected to continue until the end of August, before V/Line completes the final integration of the traffic signals with the rail crossing from September 14 to 16.
The department said the traffic lights were then planned to be activated in late September.
The lights have remained inactive since their installation, with issues linking the signals to the rail crossing cited as the cause.
State Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe said seeing the lights inactive for so long had been frustrating.
“I have seen first hand the confusion that drivers experience whilst navigating the intersection,” she said.
“The lights were put there for a reason and that is to increase the intersection’s safety.”
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said it was good to see progress at the busy intersections.
“It’s great to see the final works under way, with the traffic lights soon to be switched on,” Cr Sali said.
“We know there have been several incidents at this location in the past. The activation of these traffic lights will improve safety and traffic flow for all residents and visitors.
“This outcome has been a long time coming and has been part of broader infrastructure upgrades, including rail line improvements, signalling upgrades and additional train services that will soon be available, all of which council has been advocating for.”
