Business general manager Darcy Widdup said the decision to sell the paper was an easy one.
“We thought it was a good idea,” he said.
“People want to know what’s going on, and it will cover the local area and down south.”
Urana itself is a destination for the weekend warrior, with great summer spots ideal for a getaway.
“It gets pretty popular in summer, the caravan park and aquatic centre, are definitely the two hotspots for visitors.”
The Takeaway and Newsagency has long been a fixture in the town, with Darcy saying “it’s been open as long as I’ve been alive”.
“The shop’s had a few different owners over the years, but at the moment it’s owned by Michelle Macgregor and her mother Sue.”
The mother-and-daughter team purchased the business in 2021.
They have since created the Unified Community Action Network (UCAN) - an incorporated, employee‑run model designed to keep the store operating for the community.
Originally covering the communities of Berrigan Shire and the former Jerilderie Shire, the SRN has expanded its reach in the last six years.
It previously expanded into the other Murrumbidgee Shire communities of Darlington Point and Coleambally.
