I chose to do work experience with a local newspaper as I wish to become an author in the future.
Although The Telegraph covers news, not fiction, I felt it would be beneficial to learn the different writing style and area.
Throughout the week, I shadowed local journalist Billie Davern through some interviews and assisted with writing articles.
Due to the stormy weather, we had to go out to get photos of the floods for newspapers across McPherson Media Group.
These photos will be used in The Telegraph and Shepparton News.
On Tuesday, June 30, we went to Shepparton to the main office, and it was an experience.
Everyone there greeted me with smiles and were lovely people to be around. The office environment was fantastic — it felt like a huge family.
Highlights of my week included the hot chocolates I got when we went out for coffee breaks.
The café we always went to, the Brewer’s Table, has definitely become a favourite, and I plan to come back with my family.
My favourite thing we did was the interviews.
We interviewed the owner of the new lolly shop in Seymour and the owner of the Glaze Shed.
Over the phone, we had a chat with Avenel Primary School’s principal for a ‘Heroes Day’ that the school had held the previous week.
On Friday, I worked for the day with Simon Ruppert, the editor of The Telegraph, Cobram Courier and Benalla Ensign.
We wrote articles and were mostly stationed in a café while we worked, as The Telegraph no longer has an office in town.
We did some work in the Seymour library, but it can get a bit hectic and some of the visitors were anything but quiet.
Overall, my week was incredible. Getting the opportunity to work with Billie was without a doubt the biggest highlight of my week.
She was absolutely incredible — so easy to talk to, had the sweetest smile and was such a bright character.
She was constantly trying to make work entertaining and there was never a dull moment when I was working with her. She made my week enjoyable.
I’d write about more of my week, but if I go into too much detail, I’ll go over the word limit.
But I’m so thankful for the opportunity they gave me. Working with everyone was so much fun and I love meeting new people and seeing new faces.
