The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s biennial kangaroo population surveys are occurring in September across Victoria.
Helicopters will be flying at 200 feet altitude and an average speed of about 50 km/h to count kangaroos.
DEECA says flights are planned to avoid houses and livestock. Heavily forested areas are not included.
These surveys improve the government’s understanding of Victoria’s kangaroo population and help inform wildlife management decisions.
The 2024 survey identified about 700,000 kangaroos in the Hume region and 495,000 in the Loddon Mallee, in a total Victorian count of 2.3 million.
