Through VicHealth’s funding, local sports clubs have created more opportunities for women and girls to get active by offering new female teams or programs as well as providing facilities and equipment to ensure clubs can grow with their community.
The grants will also support clubs to introduce social, flexible and accessible sports programs to empower more people in the community to give sport a go regardless of their ability, gender or cultural background.
Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club will receive $1,000 to introduce a program to encourage women who have either played tennis before or who are enthusiastic to learn the basics of the game in a fun, social and active environment.
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp is excited to see more activities, teams and opportunities for less active people in the community to get involved in sport.
“Active Club Grants help to create more fantastic opportunities for people of all ages, genders and abilities to get active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Gepp said.
“Being involved in community sport is a great outlet for everyone, where you can make new friends and improve your own health and wellbeing. There are great opportunities for people in Moira to join a local club and get active.
“Local clubs and associations contribute play such an important role in our community, I’m proud to support this funding to help them provide great opportunities for the people of Moira to get involved.”
Other local clubs funded in Moira include:
Cobram Junior Soccer Association will receive $3,000 to introduce four new all-girls teams, in response to feedback from current members regarding the need for an all-girl competition for older girls, and;
Bunbartha Pony Club Inc. will receive $2,419 to introduce opportunities for adults (particularly mothers of current riders) to take part in horse riding or Polocrosse in a fun and supporting learning environment.
VicHealth CEO Dr Sandro Demaio is also excited at assisting women in the Moira region take further part in local sport.
“We’re thrilled to be able to support local sport clubs in Moira to provide more opportunities for the community to get active through a sport they enjoy,” Dr Demaio said.
“Our This Girl Can – Victoria campaign has been hugely successful at showing that women and girls, as well as a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, want to be active and live healthy lives.”
“Through these grants, more Victorians in Moira can participate in modified or social versions of traditional sport where your age, ability, background, lifestyle or gender isn’t a barrier to taking part.”
Building on the success of VicHealth’s This Girl Can – Victoria campaign, 50 clubs across Victoria will also receive funding to promote active lifestyles as part of a state-wide movement to get more women active.
