A big thank you to Lyndon Hart and all the Yarrawonga Mulwala Swimming Club helpers for setting up the pool for the Sacred Heart Primary School swimming carnival last week.
It looked amazing walking in for the annual swimming carnival. Mercy again was the talk of the carnival and whether their winning time was up.
The Year Three to Year Six students enjoyed the day held at the Yarrawonga Swimming Pool. In the hot conditions, it was great to see so many parents, friends and family come down and support the students.
The students were nervous but patient, swam their best, overcame nerves and tackled the swimming challenges head on.
From the novelties to the longer events, it was great to see students doing their best to their ability.
School leaders, Winnie Heffernan and Mac Hargreaves opened the day and welcomed all the students, staff and families.
One of the toughest events on the program is always the Year 6 invitational swim of the day.
The prestigious Year 6 Iron events were taken out by students, Lach Cruikshank and Emily Judd.
The day continued with students participating in 50 metre events in all four strokes followed by, some novelty events: the 25 metre events, more novelties and to finish the day, freestyle relays and the medley relays.
A high standard of swimming was on display, with some records being broken.
In the boys 10 year Breaststroke, Flynn Cox broke Charlie Bourke’s record from last year with a time of 53.46.
Charlie Bourke also broke a breaststroke record. He broke Fraser Nagle’s record in the 11 year boys with a time of 50.86.
The chants and sing off between the four house colours during the 50m relays was a battle of a different kind and a lot of fun.
The 20 minute free swim at the end of the day was a reward after tackling the heat and a huge highlight for the students.
The final house results saw Mercy win. Mercy took out the 2023 Swimming Carnival with 1002 points, followed by Fatima in 2nd place with 873 points, Lourdes in 3rd with 861 and Loreto in 4th place with 785 points.
Mercy Captains, Emily Judd and Harry Wren accepted the trophy with great delight and thanked all the competitors, parents and staff.
Staff gave out lots of support, took on a variety of marshalling rolls and guided the students.
Mrs Lawless coordinated the finish lines and assisted in choosing the Wangaratta representative squad which Sacred Heart staff were grateful for.
Thanks Robyn Connell for scoring and the lifeguards as well. It was great to get feedback from the lifeguards about how well the students and staff represented their school and respected the facilities.
A special thanks goes to all students for creating such an enthusiastic and joyful atmosphere.
Some of the senior students will go on to represent Sacred Heart at the Divisional Swimming Carnival in Wangaratta in the higher-level competition.
