The Bruce Bond Trophy has been run and won for another year with Daryl McKernan emerging victorious over Dave Mark in a final that went right to the wire.
Dave and Daryl had to fight their way through qualifying rounds held on Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22 to make the final that was held on Monday, March 28 with both getting through some close matches in doing so.
Dave got away quickly to pocket the initial frame and looked like running away with his first title until Daryl knuckled down to stage a comeback victory in the second.
In a decider that provided a perfect example of how well the handicapping system works the final two shots of the evening decided the contest when Daryl coolly potted both the pink and black balls to prevail.
This is Daryl’s second win in three years in this event and he will no doubt be amongst the early market favourites next year, whilst Dave is to be congratulated on making his first final in one of the marquee events.
The recent social contests have highlighted the scope of the sport to attract and include a wide demographic of players. Mia Macheda, who is the youngest member by a considerable margin, played beautifully to take out the final on Wednesday, March 22 over Rick Conomy, whilst Michael Barclay, who is a little more advanced in years than Mia, prevailed over Steve O’Sullivan on March 30.
Coming events include rounds of the Diggers Tribute and Club Challenge with the Autumn pairs being a highlight. This contest sees teams of two playing singles and doubles in a best of five frame format. Current champions are Darren Thompson and Mia Macheda.
