Moama notched a fifth straight win in Murray Football League on Saturday, defeating Numurkah.

Moama continued its excellent form in Murray Football League on Saturday, dispatching Numurkah by 35 points at Moama Recreation Reserve.

The Magpies were on a four-game winning streak entering the clash, albeit against the competition’s bottom four sides, so they had the opportunity to make a statement facing a fellow finals contender in the Blues.

The hosts made a scintillating start — one that would ultimately prove critical — by racing out to a 23-point quarter-time lead, built off four straight goals during the opening period.

Numurkah finally hit the scorers' column midway through the second term, but Moama immediately responded with three straight majors, eventually taking a solid 7.3 (45) to 2.5 (17) advantage into half-time.

The goalmouth action picked up in the third quarter as the two sides traded four goals each, Moama keeping an improving Blues at arm’s-length entering the fourth term, leading by 29 points.

The lead came under threat when Numurkah opened the final quarter with the first two goals, cutting the margin to 17.

But the Magpies responded in devastating fashion to close the match, booting three straight majors to ease any nerves and seal an impressive win in the process, 14.6 (90) to 8.7 (55).

Five consecutive wins for Moama has it sixth on the ladder, alongside a cluster of five teams with a 6-4 record, with the Magpies now only trailing second-placed Cobram on percentage.

Shannon Keam’s side has the bye next up and won’t be in action before playing another home fixture on June 27 against Deniliquin.
