Among the winners from last Wednesday’s Ambrose event were Bob and Judy Kruger, and Chrissy Gilligan with club captain and presenter of prizes Steve Buckley.
After 52 years of a mixed pinehurst mid-week event, it was an ambrose event in Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort’s five-day May Tournament last week and it proved popular with players and produced outstanding scores.

A total of 195 entries was received for the new ambrose event compared to the average of 160 for the mixed pinehurst.
“We had to change. It was too hard to administer,” pro shop head Evan Droop.
“There were too many males compared to the females and many males were missing out on a game.”
Along with at least three tee shots by each of the team’s four players, the drop shot was a condition.
Wonderful scores were recorded, none better than the local team of Bob and Judy Kruger, and Jason Williams and Raelene Davis who finished the Lake Course with a score of 55.875.
In second place with a brilliant score of 58.5 was Peter and Jenny Orr, and Jason and Vicki Ross.
Locals continued to win on the Murray Course with Steven Webster, Cheryl Viner, Chrissy Gilligan and Rodney Smith posting the best with 59.125, edging out the visiting team of Mark and Kaylene Cruise, David Gregson and Harry Cowan who had 59.5.
Cousins turn tables! For 20 years, Karen Droop and Anna Castles (at back) beat Karen’s cousins Helen Owens (Bayview, Sydney) and Marilyn Cornish (Kooringal) but that was not the case in their Tuesday clash with the score 2 and 1.
An indication of the standard was the score of 62.75 being necessary to win a ball!
YMGCR’s May Tournament attracted 1100 entries. Over 100 players attended the mid-week dinner where a delicious buffet-style meal arrangement took place.
Club president Andrew Shell welcomed diners, with a special welcome to honorary members Graham and Margaret Grant from Trafalgar who played in their 76 th tournament of May and September Tournaments.
With glorious sunshine and the temperatures in the 20s, Mr Shell commented about “ideal golf weather and incredible courses”.
“I thank course superintendent Chris Burgess and your team, and also the army of volunteers who also do a wonderful job. The course continues to improve, and our bunker program has been fantastic. And the fountain on the Lake Course eighth hole, how good that does look!
“Congratulations to all the staff, to all the starters and to the pro shop led by Evan Droop for their wonderful organisation.”
