Spectators and team members were excited to watch and participate in the semi-finals and finals.
The participants all played a round of bocce, with spectators enjoying the spectacle and cheering on every member.
World title winner Mary Greco and her husband, Joe Greco, umpired all three matches and helped participants follow the rules and hone their skills.
The rules were not always strictly enforced, with an emphasis on players getting used to the game and having fun.
“We have only played six games and now we are in the finals,” player Sheryl Hatch said.
The game itself seems simple; however, just like any sport, skill is a big factor.
The players aim to roll or throw their ball as close as possible to the target object.
When declaring the object, players can choose a ball or jack belonging to either their team or the opposing team. This object may be struck on the fly or with the help of the ground.
A throw is valid when aimed at the chosen ball or jack.
Any objects positioned within 15cm of the target ball are also valid.
With Tatura planning on opening a centre just like Kyabram’s, the future of the sport locally is bright.
Bendigo Bank has helped upgrade the Kyabram courts and make the centre more player-friendly.
“We are hoping to send a team to nationals,” Mr Greco said.
“It’s easy to tell who is winning, and the kids seem to enjoy playing it.
“We mark the balls so we know where they are when they get hit.”
In the semi-finals, Lawn Bowlers defeated Workwear Connect 19-10, while Bocce Team defeated Teckie Tycoons 17-8.
In the grand final, Bocce Team defeated Lawn Bowlers 15-9.
The Bendigo Bank Bowlers picked up the encouragement award donated by Angelo’s Pizza and Pasta Stanhope, while Teckie Tycoons picked up the lucky team prize of a free drink voucher.
The championship was sponsored by the Kyabram branch of the GMCU.
All businesses wishing to enter the Business Challenge Championship are advised it will be held on April 10 next year.
