Inter Regional Championship success

Multiple YLTC Club Champion Ellen Bruce had a fantastic weekend at the prestigious Inter Regional Country Championships, finishing runners up in the 50+ singles.

Last weekend six Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club members represented the Goulburn region in the prestigious Inter Regional Country Championships.

This event was held in Benalla and attracted the best country players from around the state over the three day period.

Multiple Club Champion Ellen Bruce had a fantastic weekend and was runners up in the 50+ singles which is an outstanding effort and recognition for the amazing player the Ellen is.

She also made the semi finals of the 50+ mixed event.

Her partner was John Brunner who played very well recovering from a massive few days of playing another tournament. John also partnered Ash Wheaton in the 50+ doubles and they performed well. Ash had a few narrow losses in the singles.

Jack Bassett had a successful weekend where he made the semis of the open singles before narrowly being defeated in a super tie breaker against the eventual winner of this event.

He made the final of the open mixed doubles with his partner Hope Curtis-McDonald but unfortunately this event was washed out.

Lucy Bassett also played very well in the 16 and Under singles where she made the semi-finals before also losing in a super tiebreaker against her opponent who went on to win the event.

Lucy made the finals of the mixed doubles consolation event, but this was washed out.

Tess Bassett participated in the 14 and Under events where she made the quarter finals of the singles. She also made the semi-final of the mixed doubles.

Overall the Goulburn region finished third with the Geelong based Barwon region making it back to back titles.

Jack Bassett made the final of the open mixed doubles with his partner Hope Curtis-McDonald but unfortunately this event was washed out.

Thursday ladies

The second season of Thursday Night Ladies will commence on Thursday, February 1. This season will run for six weeks. It is hoped all players from this season will play again and new players are encouraged to join in.

Congratulations to competition organisers Narelle Bassett and Gert Brunner on running this competition. There was always a lot of laughter between some quality tennis.

Tuesday mens

Tuesday Mens tennis resumed last week after the festive break. It was evident many participants had been practising as the standard was high. There were many close rubbers and play finished in near darkness.

Match of the night was between Stoinis and Starc. The sets were shared 3 apiece and Stoinis were victorious on games by 4. Indicating how close it was no player won all of their matches.

Bottom placed Cummins claimed their first victory of the season with a commanding 5 sets to 1 win over Zampa. Skipper Al Angwin and fill-in Grant Lewis were in great form and were undefeated for the night.

Ladder leader Maxwell confirmed their dominance with a comprehensive 5 sets to 1 win over fourth placed Hazelwood. Dave Crossley and Fred Exton were the players of the night winning each of their sets.

Warner, showing no sign of retiring, gave Inglis a tennis lesson with another 5 sets to 1 win. Club legend Noel Thomas and Corey Beggs both played superbly to win all of their matches.

Rounding out the night there was a quadrella of 5/1 wins with Head overcoming Marsh. Jeremy Kelly was the man of the match and is certainly dominating the courts.

After round 6 the ladder is starting to take shape. Maxwell 35, Head 29, Starc 28, Warner 26, Labuschagne 26, Hazelwood 23, Stoinis 23, Marsh 22, Cummins 21, Zampa 16 and Inglis 15.

At the end of the night, players congregated on the deck to analyse the season to date.

A very enjoyable feast of pizza sponsored by Waterside – Pizza, Pasta and Grill meant everyone stayed for a few refreshments.

Goulburn Murray Tennis

In Division 2, Numurkah travelled to Nathalia. It was a very close afternoon of tennis. Tess Bassett played well, just losing her singles and doubles before bouncing back to win her mixed match 8/2. Overall Numurkah narrowly lost 5 sets to 6.

Division 1 returns on February 3 allowing players in this section to compete in other tournaments.

All Stars Classic Tournament

This week Yarrawonga will host the annual All Stars Classic Tournament. This is the fifth year this event has been run. The tournament this year will run from Monday, January 15 to Wednesday, January 17.

The event is celebrated on the tournament circuit and will see the best open age and juniors playing. There are many locals players competing in both the open and junior events and they will have a great time playing.

Rock up and play sessions

The YLTC holds social aggregate style tennis at four different times during the week. Each of these events provide the opportunity for new players to come and trial tennis prior to committing to becoming a member.

The main aggregate night is Friday night starting at 6pm. Other times where anyone can simply sign-in on the day are Saturday at 1pm for all players, Tuesday morning commencing at 9.30am for ladies and Wednesday at 9am for mens social hit.

There is no compulsion to attend each of these on a weekly basis although once you have tried it once it will be hard to not keep going back.

Saturday Junior Tennis

Saturday Junior Tennis will resume on Saturday, February 3. This program is the envy of all other country clubs with over 200 kids playing on the courts each morning.

All players who have previously registered will continue as they did prior to Christmas.

Any new players are more than welcome to register. There are three different options available.

Hot Shots is designed for 5- and 6-year-olds and has lots of modified games on smaller courts. Players then move to coaching where the fundamentals of the game are taught before they graduate to match play.

Godfathers Junior Tournament

Each year the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club hosts the Godfathers Junior Tournament.

This tournament is designed for players starting to play tennis and all events are round robin in nature.

All events are singles with the age groups being 8/u, 10/u, 12/u, 14/u and 16/u.

Players from other clubs in the region will attend and it is hoped that many local players will enjoy the morning.

Club Championships

The dates for the Club Championships have been locked in. The Junior Club Championships will take place during the regular Saturday morning program on Saturday, February 24. The Senior Club Championships will be on Sunday, February 25.
