Yarrawonga Mulwala cricketers have been practising for seven weeks under new captain coach Kyle Archibald in readiness for their opening game against Wang Magpies, at Vic Park this Saturday, October 7 beginning at 1.00pm.

The new leader of the Lakers is very happy with how practice is proceeding and expects some footballers including 2023 Yarrawonga premiership stars Matt Casey and Willie Wheeler to be right for the start.

“It’s good, practice is good and I’m excited about the season,” 37-year-old Archibald told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.

“The club is heading in the right direction. My aim is for our teams to be competitive and uphold what we’ve done over the last four or five years.”

Season 2023/2024 is looking good for the Lakers who appear set to retain all senior players except for allrounder Corey McIntosh with his move to Geelong.

Opening bowler Jim Irvine will be back full-time. His pace has been described as “electric” by Archibald.

High order batsman and medium pace bowler Gus Heslin is back from Shepparton and will add to the batting and bowling depth.

Well regarded swing bowler Jyda House is back for a full season. Ollie Cope is an up-and-coming batsman and allrounder Ben McDonald is also in fine form in the nets.

The coach is also happy to have brothers, opening bowler back from England Matt McCabe, and mid order batsman and leg spinner Brock McCabe on board. “And that wily old fox Matt Knight will line up,” Archibald said.

High order batsman Reid Clarke will assume the most difficult position on the field – behind the stumps.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club President Glenn Brear is happy with how pre season has gone and said all sides are strong for season 2023/24.

“All cricket lovers are invited to come down to Vic Park to see the Lakers in action, on Thursday nights and Saturdays where refreshments will be available,” he said.

“It’s always good to see supporters and former players. And there’s plenty of talent on the other side of the fence to see.”
