Reserves
Congupna 14.11 (95) def Mulwala 2.3 (15)
The Mulwala Reserves travelled to Congupna on the weekend hoping to cause an upset but unfortunately spent most of the afternoon starring in what can only be described as a live-action survival documentary.
Things actually started brightly when Jack Macdermid kicked the first goal of the game, briefly giving Mulwala supporters the dangerous feeling known as hope.
Sadly, Congupna responded by kicking the next several thousand goals and the scoreboard quickly began resembling a cricket score.
With player numbers thinner than a pie warmer at 4pm, Mulwala called in reinforcements from the Under 17s.
Three young guns stepped up to help out and showed plenty of courage against bigger bodies.
The future looks bright, even if the present looked like a very long afternoon.
The injury list also grew faster than Congupna’s score.
Pete Templeton put his body on the line diving for a mark and paid the ultimate football price, suffering a broken collarbone.
Not long after, Hunter Lonergan was forced from the ground after a heavy knock left him with concussion, further testing Mulwala’s already stretched stocks.
One of the more memorable moments came courtesy of Jye Brennan, who somehow found himself taking the kick-outs without a jumper on.
Whether it was a tactical move to improve aerodynamics or simply a wardrobe malfunction remains under investigation, but it certainly added some entertainment for the crowd.
Despite the scoreboard, the effort never dropped.
Brock Johnson, Mitchell Appleby, Jack Macdermid, Isaac Pitches, Cameron Carling and Declan Wood battled hard all day against a Congupna side that was in no mood to show mercy.
The final siren was greeted with equal parts relief and gratitude that there were still enough healthy players left to attend the winery walkabout the following day.
Goals: Jack Macdermid 1, Isaac Pitches 1.
Best: Brock Johnson, Mitchell Appleby, Jack Macdermid, Isaac Pitches, Cameron Carling, Declan Wood.
