The A Grade Boys event saw Ryan Lo, with a perfect score of 60 in four sets, snatch the title from Aden Modderkolk on 55. Aden went close to lowering Ryan’s colours, losing 14-15 in the final set of the round.
A Grade Girls winner Melissa Voeurn and runner-up Amy Payne.
Melissa Voeurn continued her winning ways of years gone by, scoring 62 in the A Grade Girls with Strathmerton’s Amy Payne, 49, and Ava Talbot, 48, fighting it out for runner-up honours.
A Reserve Boys runner-up Maddix Kong and winner Bosco Su.
A Reserve Boys was a hot contest with little separation between the players. A competitive field saw Bosco Su have his work cut out, but he nevertheless reigned supreme, with a perfect score of 63 in his three sets.
Maddix Kong was runner-up on 60 closely followed by Cedric Pang and Ben Dean. These four young lads showed great sportsmanship and are fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in team events. Maddix and Ben along with Harry Thompson and Harlin Robbins are members of the successful Year 8 Cobram Anglican Grammar School Badminton team at district level and are hoping to take all before them at regional level in the second semester and move forward to the state schools badminton finals at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
B Grade Girls winner Jessica Voeurn and runners-up Vanessa Voeurn and Diana Daroui.
The battle for supremacy between the Voeurn sisters over the years continued Friday night with just one point separating them at the end of the B Grade Girls tournament. Jessica took the honours on this occasion, with 56, with her sister Vanessa and Diana Daroui pushing her to the edge with scores of 55. Strathmerton’s Kasey Beurs was hot on their heels with 54.
B Grade Boys runner-up Melvin and winner Noah Beurs.
B Grade Boys saw Strathy’s Noah Beurs turn the tables in the family’s favour with a perfect score of 60 to snatch the trophy from Melvin’s grasp. Noah’s brother Zayden, Tyler Holt, Melvin and Rylan, just a few points away, were very competitive, keeping their opponents on their toes.
The C Grade Boys was also a great battle and it was pleasing to see the sportsmanship displayed. Youngster Xavier Talbot, several years junior to his opponents, showed great skills and determination along with newcomer to the game Declan Perkins, who was also impressive. Both boys have the ability to reach a high standard by the end of the season. Nevertheless, it was Jordan Talbot who reigned supreme with a perfect score, displaying great fighting skills in close sets. Runner-up Coen Pang, who is still in primary school, continues to follow in his sister Cadence’s footsteps and will no doubt be a valuable acquisition to the CAGS badminton team in Year 7. It was also great to see the marked improvement Herbie Euston has made in his game.
As always seems to be the case, Melody Su and Angelina McKay fought out the C Grade Girls Title, with Angelina snatching the trophy by one point. These girls are still in primary school and had the honour of being invited to play at district level in the Year 7 CAGS girls’ badminton team with Jessica and Vanessa Voeurn, which says a lot for their ability and skill level.
The senior players in the weekly competition also joined in the fun, with Chuong Voeurn joining his daughters by taking out the Open Men’s title with a score of 81 points to make it a night to remember for the Voeurn family. Bailey White was also in match-winning form and did everything in his power to stop the Voeurn family supremacy, going down by one measly point at the end of the night to be runner-up.
Meg Wilkin took out the Open Ladies title with a perfect score of 63 in her three sets, whilst Cadence Pang was runner-up with 58 points. Just one point behind were Natasha Smith and Chloe Modderkolk, who drew on 57 points to take out the honours for the Under 21s.
It was great to welcome former club champions, Cadence, Natasha and Martin Kong home from university for the tournament and know they still remember where it all began for them in the world of badminton.
The tournament culminated in a serving competition, which saw Aden Modderkolk in hot form in the play-off with Bosco Su, winning 4 to 1.
Friday night badminton will take a break for three weeks, returning to the Cobram Sports Stadium on Friday, July 19 at 7pm. The Singles Championships will take place on Friday, August 9.
