Shepparton News Goulburn Valley League Netball Player of the Month for June: Seymour’s Ellie Fuhrmeister
Seymour’s Ellie Fuhrmeister netted close to half her goals this season in June and it’s no coincidence that the Lions have been on a five-game tear in tandem with the form line of their star front-court dynamo.
It’s been business as usual for Fuhrmeister, netting 135 goals including a 46-goal haul against Rochester, securing her position as the fifth-highest scorer and one of the Goulburn Valley League's most formidable goal shooters.
But it’s her team’s standing that matters most to the former A-grade coach; the Lions are flying with nine wins, two losses and a draw, and she was quick to point outside the goal ring when explaining her industrious month.
“It doesn't really happen unless the girls bring the ball down to you,” Fuhrmeister said.
“I feel like our front end has been working hard to keep showing some variety and putting something different out on court.
“Rosie (O’Sullivan), Casey (Adamson), Liv Barry, Lucy Zotti, Ellie Black, they've all been great in being able to get the ball down to me as well.
“It’s just feeling confident — I think working with Ellie, in particular, in the goal ring and Ruby Martin on occasion has made it really easy to have that confidence to keep shooting.”
Fuhrmeister said a six-goal win against Mooroopna and an improved training structure after a small mid-season dip had been the impetus behind Seymour’s recent run, which has it well-placed to put pressure on the undefeated top two of Euroa and Shepparton.
“It’s feeling super confident out on court and I feel like (Lions coach) Casey's worked really hard to get us to where we are,” she said.
“Our team has had a bit of time together now; I feel like we've just started to gel as a team the last couple of weeks and really playing for each other has been able to net us a few wins.”
It’s been a red-letter season for the long-time Seymour servant, who was officially recognised with GVL life membership earlier this year after passing 200 A-grade games.
Of course, it’s a life member’s CV to boot, one that includes three A-grade premierships, eight finals appearances, three-time GVL interleague representative and coaching appointments at Seymour and the GVL.
“I feel like I've been around for a long time and, I suppose, that probably makes it known that I have been around for a long time,” she said.
“I love the game, and I love our club.
“It was nice to reflect on my journey through the club.”
