This was a previously disused area of approximately 2300 square metres which is part of the older section of the Yarrawonga College P-12 and next to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Community & Learning Centre, (formerly Neighbourhood House.)
A steering committee of six people was formed in 2010 for the purpose of planning, site selection, fund-raising and organisation of volunteer labour and materials.
An extensive underground watering system was installed and 24 raised garden beds were built inside a fenced off enclosure.
Construction of a shady gazebo, a stand-alone circular herb garden, a sensory garden and a row of citrus trees then followed.
As stated in the Yarrawonga Chronicle on July 14 2010, “our aim is to establish this facility for use by individuals or groups of people for the social connection, education, physical activity and the harvesting of healthy food that this garden would provide.”
Funding through grants from Moira Shire, as well as government sources, State and Federal, greatly contributed to the steady toil of enthusiastic volunteers - mainly Fiorino, Jim, Tom and Paul in the early days.
Other community donations over the journey have been gratefully received from:
Alexandra Park Club Ltd, Lions & Lionesses of Yarrawonga, Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala, Thales Australia Ltd, Yarrawonga Holiday Park Inc, Yarrawonga Mulwala Development Inc andWater Dynamics Yarrawonga.
Today, through the dedication of newer members, the site is fully developed with additional features such as a protected area for stone fruit, apple and pear trees, an upgraded water reticulation system, compost bins and tool shed.
“We have 15 active members currently and would welcome new member applications,” Paul Flavel said.
“You don’t have to lease a garden bed to be a member. For a nominal annual fee, you can simply enjoy visiting and relaxing in this thriving environment, interact with other members, share skills and knowledge, or maybe select some herbs and grab a few lemons for home cooking.
“Younger people are especially encouraged to join us to ensure that the garden’s success is sustained and nourished with new ideas.
“People from diverse cultural backgrounds are also welcome to participate in the growing of fresh traditional foods which may not be available locally through retail outlets.
“As well as the social and economic benefits, think of exercising in the fresh air and vibrant surroundings of the Yarrawonga Community Garden.
“Please feel free to contact Anne Marie on 0409 312 864 or Wendy on 0402 001 850 for further enquiries and details.”
