“It was atrocious over the labour day long weekend and it is happening far too regularly,” Jan Parker said.
“As soon as there is a bin at the showgrounds everyone tries to use it and dump their waste there, usually consisting of household rubbish.
“It happens at non-peak times as well, so it is not just tourists, it is locals as well.
“With the most recent incident last Tuesday night, the bins between the Lions and Darts sheds were forced open as they had been locked and rubbish that had been originally in the bins was strewn everywhere.
“Three cardboard boxes were also left next to the Rotary sheds and the Lions and Rotary members are having to clean it up, they are only volunteers, it is not their job to clean up others mess.
“Moira Shire have also been advised and have come to clean it up fairly quickly but they also shouldn’t have to come and clean up others disrespect.”
Moira Shire Council has since removed the waste but advise the community not to illegally dump their rubbish.
“The dumping of litter in Moira Shire is an offence and from time to time our officers have had to clean rubbish from the side of the road, a public reserve or even on a nature strip,” General Manager Community Sally Rice said.
“This illegal dumping can range in scale from a single bag of household rubbish to large household items such as televisions, electrical appliances, furniture, mattresses, industrial waste, construction and demolition materials, garden waste, packaging, tyres and even old cars.
“The clean-up of illegal dumping is a cost we can’t plan for.
“The EPA’s Illegal Dumping Strike Force program has shown that on average, local government areas including Moira Shire pay around $76,000 each year to clean up almost 33,000 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish.
“This rubbish can threaten wildlife and lead to long term contamination of land, waterways and groundwater, particularly when the rubbish is from an industrial source.
“We encourage residents and businesses to contact us immediately on 5871 9222 if you witness any illegal dumping.”
