As well as the 60km/h speed limit extending, the 80km/h speed zone which currently ends just east of Silverwood’s Boulevard, will extend to just east of Hogans Road.
After the completion of the Woods Road/ Murray Valley Highway roundabout, which was identified by community as a priority for improvement due to increasing congestion and safety concerns, Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) in conjunction with VicRoads identified that further safety measures were required.
Construction of the roundabout has improved safety, relieved pressure at one of Yarrawonga’s busiest intersections and reduced motorists speed for a stretch of the highway, however residents east of Woods Road were still worried about the safety of motorists and pedestrians further out the centre of town.
On February 20 and again on September 17, 2020, the Yarrawonga Chronicle asked Facebook users their thoughts on a speed review of the Murray Valley Highway between Woods Road and Hogan’s Road, receiving more than 140 responses.
“If it is 60 in Bundalong, Cobram, and Strathmerton, why should it not be 60 all the way through Yarrawonga?” one read.
“Every intersection along that stretch of road from Woods Road to Hogan’s Road is so unsafe.”
Statistics have shown that over the last decade there has been a significant increase in traffic volumes and the highway has seen an increase in crashes.
At Moira Shire Councils ordinary meeting on July 22, 2020, Cr Peter Mansfield put forward a motion for Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) to review the speed limits on the Murray Valley Highway east of Yarrawonga from Woods Road to Hogans Road.
“I feel this is the ideal time to review the speed limits as the speed limit will be changed during construction of the Woods Road roundabout,” Cr Mansfield said in July last year.
“Eighty kilometers per hour is totally unacceptable in this day and age with the traffic we currently have.”
The new speed limit came into effect on Wednesday July 7.
