Works begin on new Seymour dog-friendly space

Works have started on a new dog-friendly space at Chittick Park in Seymour, creating a safe, purpose-built environment for local dog owners to exercise, train and socialise their four-legged friends.

Located behind the Seymour Tennis Complex, the Chittick Park Dog-Friendly Space is supported by $166,500 from the Victorian Government’s New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program and a $66,500 contribution from Mitchell Shire Council.

The facility is a key action from the Chittick Park Masterplan, endorsed in 2024 following extensive community consultation.

It also supports council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026–2029 and responds to the on-leash order that came into effect in July, which will increase demand for dedicated fenced off-leash areas.

The works will deliver:

• a fully fenced main area and a shy dog zone;
• secure double gates to external entrances;
• tree planting for shade, cooling and habitat;
• rocks, logs and planting for sensory experience, space breakers, marking and physical challenge;
• digging pit;
• variety of surfaces and textures for dog training and familiarisation;
• seating for all abilities; and
• space for balls and fetch.

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said the project was an important milestone for Seymour.

“It’s great to see work under way on a facility that is very important to our community,” he said.

“The Chittick Park Masterplan made clear that a fenced dog off-leash area was a high priority.

“We’ve listened and are now delivering on that commitment.

“This is about creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for local pet owners and I want to thank the Victorian Government for their support in helping bring this important project to life.”

Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by October.
