Bombers gallant in Mount Pleasant defeat

Blake Dye kicked a game-best six goals for Leitchville-Gunbower in a close defeat to Mount Pleasant in the Heathcote District Football League.

Leitchville-Gunbower’s winning streak in the Heathcote District Football League was ended by Mount Pleasant on Saturday, as the Bombers largely went toe-to-toe with the reigning premier in an 18-point loss.

Leitchville entered the clash off three consecutive victories, with a trip to the undefeated Mounts a test to see whether the Bombers could knock off the league leader.

Joel Donehue’s team were narrowly edged in the first quarter at Toolleen Recreation Reserve, as Pleasant kicked three more behinds than Leitchville, each side booting two majors.

The hosts upped the ante in the second term, slightly improving their goal-kicking accuracy by booting four majors, though the Bombers added three straight to their total to stay within reach at half-time, only trailing 5.1 (31) to 6.8 (44).

Leitchville continued to keep itself in the game during the third quarter by adding 3.1 in the period to Pleasant’s 3.3, the visitors down just 15 heading into the final change.

The 10-point advantage the Mounts gained during the second quarter ultimately proved critical come the fourth, as the two sides again produced similar outputs to finish.

Leitchville kicked 3.2 in the fourth quarter to Pleasant’s 3.5, the Bombers unable to produce the key momentum swing required to overturn the minor deficit, as they fell 11.4 (70) to 12.16 (88) in a well-fought battle.

Despite seeing its rich vein of form halted, Leitchville remained fourth on the ladder with the same 5-4 record as fifth-placed Lockington-Bamawm United, the Bombers’ percentage being slightly higher than the Cats’.

This weekend, Leitchville travels to Barrack Reserve to face Heathcote, the sixth-placed Saints coming off a bye and being a much improved side this year.
