The Rennie Hoppers travelled west to take on the Picola Blues on a lovely autumn day.
The Seniors were looking at déjà vu as they gave up the first three goals.
But to the Hoppers’ credit, they clicked into gear, with Dillon McGillvray goaling twice, and at quarter time were 11 points down.
The game continued at an even level all day, with the difference being a deep forward to aim at, which gave Picola scoring power.
The Hoppers were persistent and full of energy but struggled to get clean ball forward of the wings.
Picola were able to stretch the lead at each break and win by 56 points.
McGillvray and Dylan Chung kicked three each, and Bruce added two for the Hoppers.
Best players were Connor Hargreaves and Dillon McGillvray.
Awards: Mulwala Water Ski Club Josh Soutter, Premix King Dylan Chung, Yarrawonga Hotel Bailey Lewis, Lake Mulwala Hotel Lach Wood.

The Hoppers had another slow start and just couldn’t get the game inside a goal, going down by 22 points.
Connor Strawhorn was a standout with solid marking and creative ball use, well supported by Fern Aylward, who buzzed around getting many possessions, and Dan Nieuwenhout, who showed off his marking ability.
A fair day, but they need to start grabbing some wins.

Rennie came ready to respond from last week, turning in a strong, united performance.
The game was a tough contest, but the backline, led by Zander, stood tall, putting their heads over the ball and being rewarded for their effort and composure.
In the middle, Ben Coffey was everywhere, with Sauce and Jacko giving first use. In the forward half, everyone played their role, allowing Truey to snag four and Judd Long the other, with all goals kicked by Under 14s.
Overall, the effort, connection and trust saw a great turnaround and a standard to build on moving forward.

Under 14s
Rennie 2.2, 7.3, 8.7, 15.10 (100) Picola United 0.0
The Hoppers had a fight on their hands and were only able to run away late to get a 100-point margin.
Rennie’s defence held up Picola’s forward forays when they had the wind in the first term.
A couple of legendary Hopper surnames in Rhodes and Lewis were impassable and allowed the runners, like Longy and Lenny, to do their thing around the ground.
Up forward, Truey snagged three at the start of a big day, and the wily Withers got four. It was a strong win to go two out of two for the Under 14s.
Awards: Darren Lewis Fencing Judd Long, Yarrawonga Skin Sun and Surf Lenny Legidi, Yarrawonga Bakery Jasper Rhodes, Border Concrete Plumbing Bailey True, Crawford Family Tom Bruce, Intium Energy Hunter Lewis.
Under 11s

A Grade
Rennie 28 defeated by Picola United 38
The A Grade side took the court against Picola United this week and, despite going down 28–38, the team showed plenty of determination and effort from the first whistle to the last.
The girls worked hard through every quarter, continuing to fight for every ball and support each other across the court against a strong opposition.
There were some great individual performances that stood out on the day, with Demi Rhodes earning the RNC Incentive Award, Claire Dawson receiving the Yarra News & Gifts Award, Jennika Parker taking home the Yarra Hotel Award, and Chelsea Banfield awarded the Yarrawonga Bakery Award.
While the result did not fall our way, there were still plenty of positives to take from the match as we continue to build and improve together as a team heading into the next round.
B Grade
Rennie 16 defeated by Picola United 57
B Grade girls came up against a very tough and experienced team.
With a very strong defence, the attacking end of Haylee, Ebb, Bri and Lains worked tirelessly to get front position and convert on the scoreboard.
In defence, Indi, Ella and Autumn contested every ball and tried to put a stop to Picola’s scoring. Fresh legs from Charlotte and Mia from the Under 17s were a great addition to the team, and both girls handled the physical aspect of the game beautifully.
Alani came into defence with some extra height and pressure and will continue to improve as the weeks go by.
Even though the loss was bigger than hoped, the B grade girls were able to identify areas to work on for further growth and improvement.
Awards – RNC Incentive: Charlotte Burrows; Club Mulwala: Alainah Bye; Yarra Hotel: Haylee Wilson; Jacyee’s Award: Bri Pye.
C Grade
Rennie 39 defeated Picola United 31
The C Grade girls’ match got off to a tough start, with Picola’s shooters showing confidence and accuracy early on.
Heading into the second quarter, a couple of positional changes shifted the momentum in our favour.
Tess was a standout, working tirelessly alongside Tegan to create opportunities and make the most of them. Millie was excellent through the centre, driving strongly and applying consistent pressure.
Lexie demonstrated great versatility and composure at both ends of the court, reading the play well and providing her teammates with options that helped us maintain possession and control of the game.
Awards: North-East Campers – Tess Bassett; Showcase Jewellers – Millie Lourie; Skin, Ski & Surf – Lexie Nolen; Miss Dolly (Players’ Player) – Tess Bassett.
C Reserve
Rennie 7 defeated by Picola United 37
The C Res girls gave it their all and, despite the scoreboard, never gave up. It was great to see them putting into practice the things we’ve been working on at training.
Trudie and Fern showed real determination in the ring, and their excellent three-foot stance and strong holds had plenty of people around the court talking. Trudie took out our top award, showing great resilience, quick feet and excellent reactions throughout the game.
The second award went to Hannah, who ran hard all game with a “see ball, get ball” attitude. She applied strong hands-over pressure, fought hard for every contest and set up some fantastic defensive throw-ins.
Third award went to Jazzy, who continues to slot naturally into any position she’s given. She brought a calm presence to the court, helped steady the team and made some great decisions with her leading and clearing.
The team is working hard at training and continuing to give it their all on game day.
Under 17s
Rennie 72 defeated Picola United 12
The team had four set goals to work on today, and they nailed them. Jasmine Lewis took out the top award, handling the rolling subs changes with ease, providing constant pressure in defence, and showing amazing effort across all positions with a can-do attitude.
Demi Rhodes was a standout again today and showed patience in her passing, shooting accuracy and speed in the centre. Jasmine Johnson and Liv Lewis rounded out the awards for the day, quickly becoming a defensive combination for other teams to be concerned about.
Every player gave their all for the full four quarters, worked hard in every position they filled and could have easily taken any top award. Well done, and keep the great teamwork up.
Under 15s
Rennie 40 defeated Picola United 13
Rennie got off to an early start at Picola, setting the tone and maintaining control throughout the game.
Shooters Chelsea, Zali and Maisie were accurate in the circle.
Midcourters Ava, Zali, Abbey and Dakota showed strong drives and worked hard through transition down the court, while defenders Lily, Sienna and Ella applied great pressure and picked up plenty of intercepts.
Coming home with a 40–13 win, and with two games down and Waaia next week, it is shaping up to be an exciting season.
Awards: Yarrawonga Bakery – Chelsea Freestone; Rhodes Family – Dakota True; Momentum 360 – Zali Mathieson; Corowa Curtains & Decor – Ava Styles.
Under 13s
Rennie 22 defeated Picola United 6
Our Under 13s had a great win today. We came out strong from the first centre pass, setting the tone early with great intensity across the court.
Defenders Lennie, Harper, Tayissa, Alice and Bethany worked really well together, contesting every ball and getting multiple intercepts.
Alice was thrown into defence, an unfamiliar position for her, and she performed exceptionally well.
Through the midcourt, Abbey, Ruby F and Alice moved the ball smoothly down the court.
Their passing was controlled; they used strong drives towards the ball and worked hard to get into front position.
In the goal circle, shooters Darcy, Ruby J and Grace showed great composure under pressure. They worked well together to move around the circle and create space for each other.
To secure the win, everyone played their role and supported one another. It was a true team effort. Well done, girls.
