Yarrawonga Mulwala A Grade have produced an impressive all-round performance at Stan Hargreaves Oval, defeating Rovers United Bruck by 65 runs after posting 5/206 before bowling their opponents out for 141.
Batting first, the Lakers laid the foundations for victory through a patient innings from captain Reid Clarke, who scored 41 from 78 deliveries to provide stability at the top of the order.
Brock McCabe then anchored the innings with an excellent 72 from 113 balls, striking six boundaries in a composed knock that proved crucial in setting a competitive total. McCabe’s innings provided the backbone of the Lakers’ batting effort, allowing those around him to contribute as the innings progressed.
Kyle Archibald added 18 from 22 deliveries, while Zac Fraser provided some valuable middle-order runs with 22 from just 17 balls, including two boundaries.
William Wheeler finished unbeaten on 24 from 19 deliveries, including a six, while Bailey Frauenfelder remained not out on eight as the Lakers closed their innings at 5/206.
Defending 207, Yarrawonga’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance to keep Rovers under pressure throughout the chase.
Devlin Webb led the wicket-taking effort with 2/30, while J yda House produced an economical spell, claiming 2/8 from three overs. McCabe continued his strong afternoon with 2/21, and Brock’s contribution with both bat and ball proved instrumental in the result.
Matthew de Roos also made an impact with 1/21 from four overs, while Kyle Archibald and Andrew Dishot claimed a wicket each as the Lakers shared the workload across the bowling attack.
The visitors were unable to build the partnerships required to threaten the target, eventually being dismissed for 141 in 39.5 overs to hand Yarrawonga a convincing 65-run victory.
It was a complete team performance from the Lakers, with McCabe’s half-century and two wickets setting the standard, supported by Clarke’s steady start, Fraser’s quick contribution and a bowling attack that consistently restricted the opposition.
The result showcased the value of contributions throughout the side, with Yarrawonga combining a competitive first-innings total with the discipline needed to defend it and secure an important win at home
B Grade Rams
Rams 10/67 – William Murphy 20– Rovers Wickets: James Russell 8/1/22/4
Rutherglen – Ravikiran Pantham 38, Ram Wickets: Declan Reeves 3-6-1, Will Murphy 2-0-11-1
B Grade Rams suffer big loss
Rams headed to Rutherglen with optimism and winning the toss seemed like the right decision. Hargreaves and Hill strode to the wicket looking the goods until one held up on Hargreaves finding the top edge to the cordon. From here things did not improve and if not for Will Murphy’s counterattacking 25 supported by Jack Browning all out 67 could have looked a lot worse. Declan Reeves and Jordan knight bowled with great speed and control but 67 was always going to be a mission to defend, Rutherglen passing the target for the loss of only two wickets. A huge difference between the two teams were their batters prepared to face balls and held onto all their catches. Pleasing to see some up and coming junior talent none the less, Now onto round two to get back on the winners list.

Lakers take the chocolates against Rovers
Rovers United Bruck put up a fight but fell short, finishing on 156 as Yarrawonga Mulwala B Grade Bulls cruised to victory with 169. The Lakers bowlers had their moments, with Xavier Mitchell and Nathan Valentine both picking up 3 wickets, while Ollie Connell chipped in with 2. Kade Michael kept things tight, conceding just 18 runs from his 5 overs, clearly someone forgot to tell him it was supposed to be a friendly afternoon!
With the bat, Ethan Mcshanag top-scored with a classy 58 off 68 balls, smashing 10 boundaries, while Jack Hudson added a handy 20 off 22. Nathan Valentine chipped in with 22, proving he could contribute with both bat and ball. Ethan Thorp remained unbeaten on 16, doing his best to keep things together while the rest of the batting order apparently had other plans.
Despite some solid individual performances, the Rovers couldn’t quite get the job done, as Yarrawonga Mulwala took home the win. A tough day for the Rovers, but at least there were no ducks on the scoreboard, just a few disappointed batters!
C Grade
C Grade Round 1 saw the Lakers take on Rovers United Bruck at North Wangaratta Oval. With the outfield like a billiard table the Lakers were asked to field first.
Mitchell Smith and Tom Taylor opened the bowling and got off to reasonable start. The super-fast outfield was noticeable as anything that got past the inner circle made it to the boundary in quick time. Tom Taylor picked up the first wicket of the day. Mitch picking up one soon after. Kirsty Plevnik making her debut in C Grade bowled well and got herself a wicket as well, bowling the opposition batter. Billy Stevens was another to get a wicket with his leg spin bamboozling the Bruck batter to also disturb the stumps. Youngsters Murphy Doyle, Benji Wollington and Finn O’Brien bowled some good overs. But the pick of the bowlers was veteran Shaun Hawking finishing the day with 4/22. The Lakers were unable to shift the Rovers Bruck opening bat in Andy Balfour who batted through the innings finishing with 151 not out in a healthy score of 9/238.
A big score to chase down for the Lakers. The innings got off to a good start with 16 runs from the first and 8 from the second and a 46 run partnership for the first wicket between Tom Taylor and Justin O’Brien. A couple of quick wickets slowed the Lakers progress. Shaun Hawking and Billy Stevens then put together a 103 run partnership for the fourth wicket to keep the Lakers in the hunt. Billy falling for a well made 27 and Hawking retiring for 71. Kirsty Plevnik and Finn O’Brien batted out the last few overs finishing with 4 not out and 7 not out respectively. But, the target was too great for the Lakers ending the match at 5/177. A top effort as this score would win most games. A solid effort that shows plenty of promise for the rest of the season.
Next week sees the C Grade take on Rutherglen at Rutherglen.

George Hill picked the gaps, Flynn Connell was impressive as ever and first gamer Tex Alexander showed a lot of potential.
The stand out for the team was Artie Ryan with a wicket, run out and a retirement whilst batting. Rams finished 25 runs short of the bulls target but was very pleasing to see the talent on show from both teams.
