Members of the Lions Club of Seymour Goulburn recently went on a visit to the gnarliest place in town — Gnarly Neighbours — to see how we could continue to support this vital local organisation.
On Wednesday, May 13, we visited the organisation to learn more about the incredible work they are doing for young people in our community.
Thanks to a very generous benefactor who donated to our club, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to pass some of that generosity on to an organisation we have proudly supported for many years.
Our club has known chief executive Jayden Sheridan since the very beginning.
He originally came to speak to our club, hoping we might support his ideas and help get the organisation up and running through a donation.
Since then, we have watched the organisation grow into something truly special.
Supporting young people has always been important to our club.
One of the eight Lions ‘Pillars of Service’ is youth, and the work being done through Gnarly Neighbours fits perfectly within that focus.
Some of our members have even seen firsthand the positive impact Jayden has had on the younger community through their own grandchildren.
To many of them — and to us — he is a legend.
Over the years, we have supported Gnarly Neighbours through donations and by assisting with events, and we are very keen to continue doing so.
During our recent visit, we were amazed by the artwork covering the walls and by just how busy and vibrant the organisation is.
It is a wonderful place for young people and others across Seymour and surrounding areas.
They provide much more than skateboard lessons — they also run creative workshops, a social enterprise café, a kids’ apparel range and a print shop.
Outside of our support for Gnarly Neighbours, the Lions Club of Seymour Goulburn continues to assist the wider community in many ways.
We run barbecues, provide bursaries for local schools, offer community grants, and host a weekly soup night every Wednesday evening from February through to the end of November in support of the Salvation Army.
We also assist with disaster relief through our District Disaster Relief Trust, provide Traveller’s Aid at Seymour train station, and support motorists through our Driver Reviver Rest Stops.
There is also plenty coming up for the club in the months ahead.
Over the King’s Birthday weekend, we will once again host our Driver Reviver Rest Stop between Avenel and Seymour, offering free tea and coffee to travellers.
We are also planning a car boot sale, hopefully in September, and later in the year we will hold our annual China and Lace Afternoon Tea in November — an event that sells out very quickly each year.
