Murray Bombers earn Rochy revenge

Echuca continued its perfect start to the Goulburn Valley League football season against Rochester, soundly beating the Tigers at Moon Oval to avenge last year’s semi-final defeat.

After two comfortable home wins over Tatura and Benalla, Echuca was on the road for the first time in 2026, facing a Rochy side that was winless in its first two games.

Echuca showed why it has been one of the league’s best sides right from the off, kicking the first five goals of the game before Rochester halted the avalanche with one of its own before quarter-time.

The respite was only momentary for the Tigers, as the Murray Bombers kicked four of the next five in the second term, with their inaccuracy ensuring the margin didn’t blow out further, Echuca leading 9.13 (67) to 3.4 (22) at half-time.

Rochester seemed to use the main break to good effect, as its second-half display was much improved, the Tigers first matching Echuca with two goals apiece in the third quarter, though barely reducing the deficit.

Simon Maddox’s side slowed down in the fourth period, Rochy kicking three goals to Echuca’s one to cut the margin to five goals in the end, the Murray Bombers winning 12.14 (86) to 8.8 (56).

The win not only means Echuca is one of just two sides with a perfect record through three games, the other being Shepparton Bears, but also placed it top of the ladder with a percentage over 200.
